Where bikes, boats rule By Laura Moss Tired of traffic and high gas prices? At these islands, you can enjoy a vacation destinations where your wheels aren't welcome. Daufuskie Island, S.C.: This small wooded isle between Hilton Head, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., is accessible only by boat. Golf carts and bicycles are the only forms of transportation on the island, but what makes it unique is its Gullah food, music and local art. The island is mostly undeveloped, but has a resort, two golf courses and an art gallery. Info: www.sciway.net/city/daufuskieisland.html. Bald Head Island: Located at the tip of Cape Fear, it is accessible only by boat. More than 80 percent of Bald Head is conservation land where visitors can enjoy nature hikes and view sea-turtle nesting areas, but the only way to get around is by foot, golf cart or bicycle. Please sign up for the Daufuskie Paper. "The Front Porch" The link is on my site. Please send a small donation as the paper is completely funded by small donations and well worth your time to do this. The paper will eventually add a paypal button and some ad sense but right now if you would kindly mail your check all donations are appreciated. While there are a few Daufuskie Island bloggers and the islandpacket paper on Hilton Head, "The Front Porch" is the only real coverage for local happenings on Daufuskie Island. It is graciously published by an island local resident who is very generous with her time and effort that it takes to write, email, fund raise and put out a local newspaper. http://www.daufuskiefrontporch.com/index.php/current-issue-and-archives This NewPaper will give you so much more current information about the island. More than I could ever begin to blog about.
