Saturday in Heaven-Fuskie Island

My husband and I decided on Saturday, March 1st to take our bikes on the Melrose Ferry and head over to Daufuskie Island from Hilton Head Island. The weather was about 70degrees and as always we met wonderful, interesting people on the 50 minute boat trip over. We began by riding up Cooper River Landing, past Jake Washington, to Haig Pt Rd past the entrance to Haig Point a wonderful private golf community on the island where most of the year round residence live and down the majestic Avenue of the Oaks that use to lead up to the main mansion on the Melrose Plantation. Spanish Moss was dripping from the trees, the golf course was lush and green and the only sound as if you could hear a pin drop was the faint sound of a golfer teeing off on the Jack Nicholson Melrose Course. The most interesting thing that happened to us today was on the back side of the island, the marshside, near the famed Marshside Mamas restaurant and bar. We were biking along on a sandy road and a bull with a leash around its neck sauntered out in the road and started heading toward us. It crossed the road and disappeared in a field as if it was someones house pet. We also saw a good sized alligator on the banks of a pond by sportsman drive within Melrose. We finished up by heading to Jacks and having spicy bloody marys on the patio. What a great day of intense exercise, unbelievable beauty, and finally some relaxation. The 5:45 boat back really gave us a sunset cruise.....ahhhh even more relaxation.
